Freedom...Inside and Out
Freedom… Inside and Out is a program that brings people inside the jail and out into a partnership in the belief that together they can discover a way for inmates to leave jail and never return. The teaching tool is basic, foundational ballroom dance: disarming and fun, but powerful when used as a metaphor for leading and following in life. The curriculum is flexible and sensitive; seeds of change can be planted whether an inmate has a year or a day to experience it. Inmates gain insight into responsible decision-making, leadership, and partnership in life lessons that are made very real and clear on the dance floor. Their experience in jail is the result of poor decisions they made, whether their choices happened while leading themselves or following a poor leader. In class, on the dance floor and off, these choices are discussed along with the following fact: the best leader in life, the only one who can change a life and the recidivism rate, is Jesus Christ. All are free to choose, and The Dovetail Group would help them put their hands in His.
The Dovetail Group/House has several programs active around Richmond. Each serves different age groups and demographics in diverse locations of the metropolitan area. All programs use dance as a teaching tool and gateway to greater life lessons. Whether or not the gospel is spoken out loud, The Dovetail House believes that life is better with God than without Him. Everything we know and read about makes us believe that, especially in the prison system, God is the only chance for real change. We use the dance floor as a way of introducing people to God and pointing to Him.
